stupidly obssessed with this show

STEVE: Speak to me my special guy.
HENRY: I’m not *your* special guy, dickhead.

SPIRITED - #2.08 The Real Thing

…the subtle inference that he is someone else’s (ie. Suzy’s) special guy is just further evidence of great writing for this show.

Suzy: You smell of cigarettes …and beer.

Henry: Do I? Sorry.

Suzy: No, I like it…

(ASTRA Award Voting still open)

mutetroubadour:

Henry: Would you eat some for me?
Suzy: Ah, no. I don’t really like it. Steve was always buying cheese and then yelling at me for not appreciating it.
Henry: I’m not going to yell at you.

Regarding Suzy and Henry.

Yes, Suzy and Henry have this beautiful, honest, consuming love. It burns and soothes and flutters in a way that neither of them had ever been given the chance to experience before meeting each other. But before this, before the dreams and taxis and, “I can hear your heartbeat,” you know what? There was friendship. Just a spark. You might have missed it. Because once there, it didn’t take long for these two to tumble into deep affection. But I think it is very important to their story.

Nobody liked Suzy. No one. Her own husband thought she was awkward and weird and completely devoid of lovable qualities. He never saw her, and he was never her friend. And Henry— Henry was so lost in the world. So lonely and caught up in a life he had no idea how to handle that he threw away everything. He left behind, chased away, alienated everybody that could have ever meant anything to him. And in the end, at his death, nobody really liked him either.

They live and die that way, isolated and unable to connect. Then, they meet each other, again. For a second time. On different sides of existence, for something bigger, greater, than either of them can know or fathom. So they’re flung upon each other blindly. And forced to muddle their way through it together; insanity and ex-husbands and horses and walls. They bang heads and knock knees and chip away at the sharp angles that life has carved into them.

And then we are given this scene. Perhaps the first moment in their respective lives (and deaths) where either of them can just be. See this? This is them being, no pretenses. And there is acceptance, and a hint of trust because Henry can offer Suzy something that Steve has never given her. Even when cheese, for Henry, is so significant and indicative of a life he can no longer lead, he gives her room, and time to learn something without judgement. Then without a second thought, Suzy unravels a little of herself, a memory that she shares in order to offer him something in return. And in the end, they come away with a bond that says, ‘I actually get you, I understand it. And that’s cool.’

It isn’t about love. Not yet. They were given the smallest moment, between meeting and loving, an opportunity to be themselves with another person. And look what they made, they built a friendship. Sometimes I think that’s the most beautiful part of their story.
